Frequently Asked Questions
I've heard I should have my timing belt replaced, why and when?Yes, this is very true. Normally a timing belt will get old and need replacement every 60,000 to 90,000 miles or 6 years (whichever comes first.) However, there are a couple of models that I would not go a mile beyond 60,000 miles! For more specifics, you can give us a call.
Some say I should replace the water pump at this time also. Is this true?
YES for 3 reasons:
- Many water pumps are driven by the timing belt. As the belt gets older and more worn, it also stretches, putting less tension on the water pump. By replacing the old belt with a new, tighter belt, you put more tension on the old water pump that could then break and start to leak in a few months.
- The original water pump will not likely go the distance of the new timing belt before it is in need of replacement.
- The labor to get to the timing belt and the water pump are mostly the same. Therefore replacing both at the same time is the most cost effective way to go about these particular repairs.
If my timing belt breaks will I destroy my engine?
Yes and no - it will depend on a lot of variables. But let us say that if you have a high mileage car, it can be devastating. If your car has under 100k or so, you can probably get by with the upper-end work replacing any bent valves that may have been damaged. Keep in mind that some models are more susceptible to bending valves than others and often times the speed travelling when the break occurs can play an important role. We advise the timely changing of your timing belt instead of rolling the dice.
It's been a year since I've had a tune up. Am I due for one?
Well, only if you drive 30,000 miles in a year. The spark plugs that today's cars use are far better than those of 20 years ago and really do, in most cases, last up to 30,000 miles.
Do I have to take my car to the dealer for the required services?
